So, it’s been reported that early on in the Ukraine war a peace deal was on the table. What was it?
All Ukraine had to do was abandon joining NATO.
That’s it. Now, before we go further, obviously we need to consider if Russia was serious in that offer. Personally, I think they were considering if they came back into Ukraine later, NATO would always come to its defense.
But what’s more stunning is that Ukraine said no, seemingly under pressure from Western leaders. Personally I’ve always found Ukraine joining NATO to be a bit too aggressive. It would be like Canada becoming a Russian ally. Quite frankly, the US would never allow it and take any measure to stop it.
If agreeing not to become a member of NATO was the only sticking point in negotiations, I immediately have to ask if this war has been worth it. Is Ukraine becoming a NATO member state worth tens of thousands dead and hundreds of billions of dollars? I know my answer is unequivocally no.
Interesting stuff.
